Brian's Gift

"Brian's Gift" was a poem that I wrote back in April of 2004 when I was selling custom new homes in San Diego County California. I was noticing that one of my co-workers was sad and crying a lot, so I finally build up the courage to ask her what was wrong. She began explaining to me how her only son, who just happened to be the exact same age as our son, was dying from his failed kidneys. He had received a transplant from the donor list but his body rejected it three months later. He was now in a bad situation and would not likely receive another kidney before it took his life. I felt the pull on my heartstrings, so after lots of prayer and support from my family, I decided to donate one of my kidneys to see if I can help save his life. By the grace of God, his body accepted my kidney and it was a perfect match. Brian went on to live a productive life and is still alive today. Just before Brian and I went into the operating room, I presented this poem to him and his family when our families were together in the waiting room.

I met your mom, not long ago
and through her pain, I came to know.
She has a son, her only boy
who's failed kidneys, stole his joy.

A fine young man, you seemed so meek
yet often sick, and often weak.
And night after night, hooked to a machine
that filters your blood, to keep it clean.

I can't imagine, what I would do
if I lived the life, you're going through.
But the spirit of God has touched my heart
and gave me strength, to do my part.

I want to help you if I can
please let me lend, a helping hand.
To stop this pain, you're going through
a piece of me, I give to you.

I hope it gives, your life a lift
this piece that I call,

"Brian's Gift."
